The Riverside

Because you can often expect to be using large sea trout flies up to 3" long which can be hard to cast and possibly encounter very large fish at night, very light tackle is not advisable.

A popular combination comprises a single handed of 10 or 10.5 feet with both floating and sink-tip or medium sink lines (Wet cell 2).

Few local anglers risk fishing with a leader below a 10lb breaking strain. In drought conditions, when small flies are generally more successful than lures, a river-trout outfit rated at AFTM 6 is ideal, but even then a 6lb breaking strain leader tippet is a sensible minimum on this big-fish river.

If you prefer a double-hander for your salmon fishing, then a 13 - 15 foot AFTM 10 rod is ideal. As for lines, a floater and Wet Cel 2 will generally suffice. Alternatively, you may prefer a super-fast-sinking braided leader attached to the end of a floating line.

Spinning is also permitted (but not worming or shrimping), but only at high or coloured water. The Ghillie will advise you if this is so.
